Punta Cana with nothing packed

My first trip of 2018 was one for the books… or one for my favorite book – my passport. I got a new stamp thanks to a huge storm in Philadelphia that was causing a declared “state of emergency” in the city.

I received a call at 8am and had two hours to get to the airport. I was supposed to head to Punta Cana & come right back… but after a long delay, a busy flight down, and a cancelled return, we got “stuck” spending the night at an all-inclusive resort. Because of the short notice (and the fact that I was not supposed to layover), I didn’t pack much. On my way out the door, I grabbed some joggers, my favorite Selena T-shirt, and my bikini “just in case.”

I had never seen the Dominican Republic, other than from an airplane window before. So, of course I had to make the most of my short time there.

I’ve mentioned my friend, K, in a previous post about fun times in San Juan, and as you remember, we love to defrost on a beach when winter comes. Between all the food, the perfect weather and clear water calling our names, we spent our layover thanking the Universe.

Sometimes storms work in your favor… and when they do, don’t worry about if you’re packed for it, just count your blessings & float away.

Thanks for stopping by… I’m going to go wash the sand off.

Yesterday Germany, Tomorrow Italy

I was talking with my best friend one night & she asked me where in the world I was. I told her I had just gotten in from Puerto Rico after being in Germany yesterday, then I’d be heading to Rome tomorrow. The simple fact that that’s what my conversations sound like now is just ridiculous to me… & I absolutely love it!
My crew to Germany was amazing. We were all pretty junior and we wanted to go out & see the city. This was my first time there & I was looking forward to schnitzel & bier!
We stay just outside of Frankfurt, in Mainz. The city is gorgeous. The hazy weather added to the beauty around us.

After some congregating at our hotel, we head out for some food at a restaurant that’s a crew favorite. The crew & our waitress all suggested schnitzel, so, after plenty of thought, that’s what I order… Schnitzel & dark bier. Yum.

At dinner, we run into another crew member & his partner, who is a local. Our group grows & we set off to explore together.
Everything is so beautiful, from the streets, to the buildings, to the trees. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It feels like I’m on a movie set! I stop occasionally to touch trees & buildings just to make sure they’re real.

We spend the day frolicking & making stops here & there for a drink or dessert… It’s Sunday, so there isn’t a whole lot going on.
We all get to know each other better & have great laughs as we close the day by the river.

A couple of us head out for some late night exploring, where we meet some interesting locals along the way. When we stop and ask for directions, one guy says he’ll walk us. He’s carrying 2 duffle bags & a backpack… He’s just getting in from Berlin. He’s spent all day on the road, in traffic, and now he’s showing us around, while lugging his baggage.
He had the most wonderful attitude & was so sweet, I just has to mention him. That was my impression of Mainz… & Germany. A beautiful city with nice people, good food & great bier!

IMG_3912.JPG

When I returned to Philly, I got called for a quick turn to & from Puerto Rico. It was an easy work day…those crews are always fun. Then, I had a few days off…
That’s when my friend, Anabel ( who you met here) invited me to Rome!
I was debating on visiting a friend in LA & going to a show… I even asked a few people about it. The answer seemed obvious to everyone but me. So, at the last minute, while standing at the gate, I walked away from my LA departure & headed towards the gate for Rome!
Anabel was surprised (& excited) to see me. I was pretty excited myself. This would be my first time in Italy…& to do it with a friend, who was willing to share her (free) hotel room…I mean, yay!
When we arrive, Anabel needs to rest. I was able to sleep on the flight over, so, while she naps, I get ready for the day. I love our hotel. It’s cute & quaint. The decor is exactly what I think of when I imagine Rome. There’s a vanity in the room with a darling little chair. The mirror is old & misty. There’s doors (with long windows with wooden panels and shear white curtains) that lead to the terrace. It’s adorable.
Anabel has been here before, so, she has a game plan. When she wakes, we hit the ground running. Here’s how we saw Rome in a day…

After a day of walking around the entire city, we were pooped. Anabel hailed a cab back to the hotel & even though I wanted to go out & see Rome’s nightlife, I ended up falling asleep in the cab. It was a wonderful day & I was ready for a good night’s sleep.

Bilingual Got Me Barcelona

I had a couple days off & I was feeling “stuck” in Philadelphia. Flights back home to San Diego were all full and I was a little homesick. Since I couldn’t get back to California, I volunteered to work during my off days. I was hoping I’d get called on a fun trip.
I’m woken up by my phone… It’s Scheduling calling me. I guess something opened up… I jump to answer. The voice coming from the other end sounds absolutely angelic when he says, “Cecilia, we have a four-day trip to Barcelona tonight. Are you interested?” Ummm, heck yes, I am!
I joined the seasonal “language of destination” program to practice my Spanish and to see if flying to Spanish-speaking destinations is something I want to continue to do on a regular basis.
I’ve always been a little embarrassed to speak Spanish because I didn’t learn the language until I was 12 years old, and I never felt like I mastered it.
One day (in San Diego) my dad asked me to bring him a hanger…but he asked me in Spanish. When I didn’t do it, he approached me to ask why. I told him I didn’t understand what he said. I’ll never forget the look on my dad’s face…he looked heart-broken.
That day, he told my mom that we’d be moving across the boarder to Mexicali. So, while all my friends were off to Jr. High, my younger sister and I were to attend a private school in Mexico to study the language until we were fluent. It took about 3 months before I was awarded “Student of the Month” and with that came the opportunity to return to school in California. Back then, I was pretty upset about the whole ordeal, but now, I’m so thankful for the opportunity. Learning Spanish has definitely opened doors for me…

Now I’m on my way Barcelona with a great crew. Since we have two full days in the city, we’re all making plans to go out. So many different personalities, so many different things to do. I’m excited.
I can’t even sleep when we get to our hotel. It’s beautiful! The room is very contemporary & the accommodations are great. I shower & lounge around in the plush robe & slippers provided while I wait on a couple of the ladies. We’ve agreed to meet in the lobby in the afternoon.
At the top of our list, is the famous Sagrada Familia, just one of the many masterpieces by Gaudí. When we step up out of metro station, we take in the scenery… Then, we turn around, and we’re stunned by the massive work of art that stands before us. It’s absolutely breathtaking.

20140709-065825-25105731.jpg

We walk around the entire building. Each side of the church has a different look to it. So many intricate details. I’m in awe.
Unfortunately, due to a private concert that evening, the church is closed earlier than normal. We can’t see the inside. Bummer.
After some walking around & a light snack, we meet another flight attendant back at the hotel. One of the ladies has other plans. So, we say bye & continue our day.
Another of the ladies is retiring this year. She’s committed to seeing as much as she can see before she hangs up her wings. She’s so much fun. She’s been out with me all day.
The flight attendant we’re out with now, travels to Barcelona regularly & is proud to show us around. She’s also originally from California. She’s such a great tour guide.
We walk to Las Ramblas, the popular street in Barcelona where you can find just about anything. It’s full of families, tourists, locals, shops, restaurants, markets, etc.

The area is just full of life. We make a few stops along the way. One of our stops is at the local market. We pick up fruit & cheeses to snack on.

20140709-070830-25710470.jpg

I need to pull out cash, so, I stop at an ATM where I meet (& briefly chat with) Kyle Bryant, an American artist who is spending his time capturing Barcelona in a very unique way… Watch here.

The ladies & I are headed to dinner & a flamenco show. We join another crew member for dinner at a restaurant that is a crew favorite.
The flamenco show is in the same square, so, it’s a short walk to the venue. When the dancers & musicians take the stage, the room is captivated. The movements, the sounds, the storytelling…it’s such a great show. I even consider moving to Spain & learning the art, myself!

20140709-071056-25856365.jpg

The next day, I meet up with my fellow California girl again. She and another one of the ladies are spending the day in Sitges. I decide to join them.
After our train ride, we arrive to the gorgeous beach town. The weather is perfect & the beaches are full. The water looks amazing.

We didn’t plan to spend time in the sand. We want to walk around & see the area. We hit the streets & take in the sites. Then, we stroll along the water before stopping for a drink.
It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and it’s a warm 70 degrees out. We’re sitting outside with a great view of the ocean. Each of us is enjoying a glass of wine…and one of the ladies reminds us that we’re getting paid to do this. What a life!

I have plans to visit another one of the Gaudí sites. So, after a few hours in Sitges, I hop a train back to Barcelona. Then, I take the local metro to Park Güelle .
I didn’t really know a whole lot about the park, I just knew I wanted to see it. I have to stop for directions along the way.
Once I see what’s up ahead of me, I know I should’ve planned ahead, and worn more sensible shoes. That’s ok, though. I used to live in five inch heels…I can do this.
After my hike up what seemed like never-ending stairs, I make it into the park. There’s so much to see.

There’s a line to enter the part of the park that houses all the well-known exhibits. So, I walk around the the surrounding area before I buy my ticket.
*Note: Purchase your entry before exploring the outside area. Then, it should be your assigned entry time and you won’t have to wait in line to enter. Also, wear comfy or athletic gear. You can make it a day of hiking. You might even want to pack a picnic to enjoy in the park. There are so many great views.

After my big day out, I’m pretty pooped. When I get to back to my hotel, I run into one of the ladies that visited Sagrada Familia with me. We begin to recap our trip. We both decide we want to hit the town one more time before bed.
We stroll down Las Ramblas one last time before calling it a night. The city is alive. It’s hard for me to leave. But, we have a big day ahead of us…we have to work.
I wake up early, to catch the sunrise at the rooftop pool before getting ready for our flight. It’s beautiful. I love Barcelona & I can’t wait to be back over & over again all summer.

Thanks Mom & Pap for sending me to school in Mexico to learn Spanish all those years ago… Being bilingual got me Barcelona!

Soundset

Where do I even start…?
Have you ever had those moments in life where everything is just perfect? Well, I just had a whole long weekend of that exact perfectness. Great weather, delicious food, awesome people & all-access to the most amazing music…
I woke up Saturday morning and rushed to the airport to catch a flight to Minneapolis. I was going to spend Memorial Day Weekend out in Minnesota to catch Soundset, the annual hip hop festival held by Rhymesayers Entertainment at Canterbury Park. I’ve wanted to go to Soundset for a few years, now. This year, it finally happened… on Sunday, May 25, 2014, I spent the day with 30,000 other music lovers at the sold out event…
During my flight, I met a few people who were headed to the festival for the Bboy Competition. I didn’t have any set plans during the day, so, they invited me along. We stopped at The Mall of America and rode a crazy roller coaster. Then headed to the 5-8 club for a famous Juicy Lucy burger.
20140528-215039-78639788.jpg

20140528-215040-78640259.jpg

After lunch, I met up with the famous, Eddie Sancho, for some drinks before the Soundet Pre-Party . (I’ll share more about Eddie someday soon. Chances are, if you’re a fan of hip hop, you’ve heard his work).
We’re having drinks at the hotel when Eddie asks if I’d like to check out the venue for tonight’s show… It’s at the legendary First AvenueThe house that Prince built – which has been around since 1970 and was featured in the film, Purple Rain. It’s stage has been graced by countless amazing musical acts. Of course I want to see it!

20140603-003524-2124656.jpg
When we get there, they’re setting up for the #BeforeSoundset show. It’s cool seeing the empty space & witnessing the calm before the storm.

20140603-003609-2169524.jpg

From there, we head over to the Rhymesayers offices. I’m so excited! This is where a lot of the (behind the scenes) magic happens… We get a private tour of the facilities, have some delicious local beers and grab some gear from the Fifth Element Store. Not to mention, I got to meet some super cool people!
We have dinner near the venue, and get ready for the show. Thanks to Eddie & the amazing team at Rhymesayers, Here’s a little glimpse at how the night went…

The pre-party definitely set the tone for Sunday… aka Soundset Day. I woke up so excited!
Let me start with the line up…

20140608-005559-3359505.jpg
from Veterans, to fresh new artists, to some of today’s heavy hitters, the wide range of acts consisted of both, men & women, representing various ethnical backgrounds. With DJ’s, B boys & MC’s on three different stages, a car show, graffiti wall, and skate ramp, there was something there for everyone.
I’ve attended a lot of hip hop festivals before this & I gotta say, this was, by far, my favorite one ever. (Ok, maybe the accommodations and all access pass had a little something to do with that). But, nonetheless, the guys at Rhymesayers really know how to throw a party. I’ll let my pictures do (most of) the talking…

20140608-005046-3046926.jpgAfter a fun shuttle ride with a great group, we got there just in time to catch Snow Tha Product rockin’ the stage. I learned about her when I saw her on the line up a few weeks before. She’s a young Latina from San Diego and I love what she stands for. Don’t let the pretty face fool you, either, this girl can spit rapid fire!

It wasn’t long before I caught up with my favorite Instagram Photographer… Mr. Evidence was hard at work, running the Soundset ig account .

Mums In The OC – Stepbrothers at The Observatory

It’s no secret that I love Evidence…I guess you can say it’s pretty evident. 😉 So, when I saw that he had a show in Southern California with genius producer & fellow rapper The Alchemist (who also shares my birthday) when I’d be in town, I reached out about attending the show & covering it on the blog (again).
I had some time off this past weekend & really wanted to make the most of it…I planned on being in San Francisco for a baby shower on Saturday for one of my dearest friends. So, I squeezed in as much family, friend & fun time as I could in 4 days.
I flew to San Diego to spend time with my family before heading to Nor Cal. It all worked out great, too. I had originally planned on taking my bestie & her husband to the Stepbrothers show at The Observatory in Orange County, but our schedules didn’t allow for that. My mom “jokingly” asked if I’d take her instead…I thought it was a great idea! I checked the website & once I saw that it was an all ages event, I invited my little (13yr old) sister, too! This should be fun…hip hop with my mom & the lil’ sis…!
When I’m going to a show, I like to bump the artist’s music. It gets me in the mood for what’s to come. So, the soundtrack for the drive from San Diego to Orange County is, of course, Lord Steppington. I promise my mom & sister that I’ll have them at the venue by the time the album is over…& I keep my word. We pull up listening to Bally Shoe, the last track on the playlist. Once we’ve parked, we walk through the rain to the box office. As promised, my name’s on the list. Thanks, Ev… I “drove too far to hear they closed the guest list.” Ha!
When we get inside, we’re a little late… We’ve missed Bambu‘s & Fashawn‘s sets. I’m pretty bummed, but what can I do? At this point, I’m just excited to be there in time to catch the closing act.
I lead my mom & sister through the crowd, as I keep looking back to check on them. I remember hearing my mom say, “It looks like the Eminem movie in here.” Lol. We find a place near the stage, with a great view….and just in time, too. Evidence & Alchemist hit the stage with Just Step, a very playful & fun track from the album… With lyrics like “Rawr Rawr like a dragon dungeon. Change your shitty drawers cuz your pants got dumped in.” The guys are energetic & they have the crowd enthralled as they “spit each word meticulous…” They set the perfect tone for the night.
Being from Southern California, they are literally at home on stage. I heard the guys mention in an interview that they would utilize their European tour as a “survey” or “case study” to “watch the crowd” and see what works… & even though I didn’t think it was possible, they have absolutely perfected their set since I saw them at the opening of the tour in Amsterdam in January! Their connection to each other, to the music, and to the crowd is undeniable.
The audience sings along as the guys perform tracks from their debut collaborative album, some Dilated Peoples hits, and of course, solo classics. My mom & little sister are enjoying the show. My mom is especially ecstatic when Ev performs her personal favorite, You, the banger produced by the legendary DJ Premier on Ev’s Rhymesayers debut, Cats & Dogs. Mum’s got good taste. 😉
The show goes on to be a real crowd-pleaser. Everyone is cheering, hands are in the air…& when the guys say goodnight, per crowd request, they return the the stage for an encore. They close the show with the intro track from Lord Steppington, More Wins…and I must say, this show was definitely “another victory” for all in attendance. Bravo, gentlemen. Well done!

After the show, Evidence stuck around to sign autographs, take pictures & connect with the fans. He didn’t leave until the venue was cleared. I even caught a quick pic with Fashawn. As you all know, I have nothing but love & respect for such humble artists.

One of my favorite things about shows like this, is the community…other fans, followers, hip hop heads who love the music & support the movement…my fellow travelers who catch shows in a city near them, or better yet, chase the tour!

420 with Devin the Dude

I started last week absolutely exhausted. I returned to Philadelphia on (Easter) Sunday, April 20, from back-to-back international trips. I worked Barcelona, followed by Madrid (blog posts soon to come) and my love for music wouldn’t allow me to stay in Philly to rest.
As soon as I landed and went through customs, I headed back through security to board a flight to Austin, Texas to catch Devin the Dude at The Historical Scoot Inn . I had the next day off & I had already reached out to Devin about attending the show. I was under the impression that 11pm was his set time. It was perfect, because my flight landed at 9pm…then, I got the update that he’d hit the stage at 8:30. It was too late at that point. I was already on the airplane, ready for take off. I was hopeful that I’d at least catch one song.
The flight was great. I had a wonderful crew…I actually kinda knew one of the girls. We have a few mutual friends. She offered to let me stay in her hotel room, which was awesome, because I hadn’t planned that far ahead yet.
When we landed, I rushed upstairs and changed for the show. I called a cab, while I had a drink with my new friend in “our” room. 😉
I hopped in the cab, took the 3 minute ride to the venue, paid the man & jumped out. I was greeted by Rico, Devin’s manager, only to find out that the show had just wrapped up. (Womp Womp)!
Rico was nice enough to escort me into the Scoot Inn, as he guided me up on stage, where I encountered Devin signing autographs, taking pictures & connecting with his fans. I’m always overcome by joy when I see artists take the time to show love to their supporters. This is why I’m a loyal fan of the Dude!
I waited patiently for my turn & when he had a moment, Devin greeted me with a warm smile & a hug. I got a few words in with him & of course, we snapped a quick pic. After the crowd cleared, I stayed behind, making friends with some of the other performers.
My night out in Austin ended up being a lot of fun. I went out with some of the guys, partied with locals, and talked music all night. It was a blast.
I plan on catching another one of Devin’s upcoming shows soon (and getting there in time for the show)… You can too, by clicking here.

Thanks for stopping by, everyone!

Grouch & Eligh, The Tortoise & The Crow Tour – Boston and Philadelphia

As I mentioned before in several of my posts, I love music! Being from San Diego, I’m used to always catching great hip hop acts near by. Since I’ve been out in Philadelphia, it hasn’t been quite as easy for me. So, when I saw that two of my favorite California MCs, The Grouch and Eligh, were hitting the road to promote their new album, The Tortoise and The Crow/333, I knew I had to be a part of it!
I noticed that the guys would be hitting the East Coast & I immediately checked the dates to see what worked with my schedule. When I saw that they’d be in Boston during my days off, I made plans to be there. I arranged to stay with my cousin, Jennifer, and I was so excited!
Jennifer had never been to a live hip hop show before, and since she’s originally from California, too, I thought this would be the perfect way to get her feet wet… Two Cali girls, supporting two Cali guys out on the East Coast. Clayton, Jennifer’s roommate – also from CA, decided to join us. You met Jennifer and Clayton in my last post.
When we arrive to The Middle East, we notice that the venue has two levels. There’s a comedy show going on upstairs and the audience is enjoying wonderful menu items. Everything looks & smells fantastic. Too bad we just had dinner…
We make our way downstairs & fall in love with the decor. We take tons of pictures with the cool backdrops.

When the guys hit the stage, we’re enthralled… Their stage presence is captivating. This is my first time ever seeing these West Coast masters rock an East Coast stage…it’s magical. In the crowd, hands are in the air & lyrics are being spit word-for-word. The guys are performing classic G&E hits, notable solo joints, and some of their new stuff. It’s a great show!

After the performance, the guys stick around to sell merchandise, sign autographs, and to pose for pictures with fans. They have such a personable approach.
I stand back & wait my turn…I’ve been to plenty if their shows & have had the pleasure of meeting the guys on numerous occasions. It’ll be nice to catch up. After the crowd clears, I make my way over to say hi. They’re both sweet & sincere…they take such an interest in me & stories of my travels. I’m proud, because I know that they’ve had their fair-share of seeing the world, too.
It’s pretty cool that these two remarkable human beings – who have created such amazing lives for themselves – are impressed by what I’m up to in life. They’re just as impressed by Jennifer (the Harvard grad)….Their humbleness impresses me even more than their astounding talent. I’m reminded of why I love their music & more importantly, their message.

A couple days later, I head back to Philadelphia to prepare to be on-call for work. It’s pretty cool that my commute to work is on an airplane. I’m listening to the album the entire flight. It’s beautiful looking out the widow, flying through the clouds, listening to their always-inspiring lyrics.
I’m off duty tonight & the guys have a show here in Phillly. They’re nice enough to add my name to their guest list. I bring my friend, Brittany, along. You met her in my first Puerto Rico post.
The crowd is a little smaller at The Barbary, but the enthusiasm is still there. When these guys are on stage, they ignite crowd participation. I’m enjoying every minute of their performance.

After their set, they, again, stick around to sell merch, sign memorabilia, and take pictures. They even continue our conversation about travels. These guys really know what life on the road is all about…it’s great sharing stories. We snap a few pictures & say good night. The guys are off to get their rest. They’ll hit the road in the morning, off to the next city, and next show…
